Abstract

Billingham's early photographic work was exhibited in 'Private lives, from the Bedroom to the Socials. From 18th Century to Now', Central Hall/Nave, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, Curated by Christine Macel and Fulvio Irace, (15th October 2024 - 30th March 2025). This exhibition was dedicated to the evolution of the idea of intimacy over the centuries. It explored various themes related to intimacy: sleep, relaxation, eroticism and sexuality, beauty care, cosmetics and washing, social networks, surveillance and insecurity. Billingham's photographs allowed one to enter into the intimacy of his family. At the same time they addressed contemporary economic difficulties and how this precariousness transforms ones relationship to intimacy. Other exhibiting artists were François Boucher, François Eisen, Vilhelm Hammershoi, Eve Le Bourgeois, Philip Lorca diCorcia, Franz West, Philippe Starck, Ettore Sottsass, Dino Gavina, Pierre Charpin, Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray, Makkink & Bey, Jérôme Olivet, Henri Vever, René Lalique, Erwan Bouroullec, Ico Parisi, Gianni Ruffi, Joe Colombo, Bruno Munari, Superstudio, Memphis Radi Designers, Archizoom, Verner Panton, Pierre Paulin, Christian Daninos, Jean-Pierre Laporte, Gaetano Pesce, Louise Campbell, Jean Lurçat, Pierre Bobot, Rei KAWAKUBO, Paolo Ulian, Hella Jongerius, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Kosuké Tsumura, Marc Pataut, Denis Santachiara, Matali Crasset, Vico Magistretti, Bruno Munari
