Abstract
Retailing is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, and while retailers have an important role to play in addressing net-zero emissions, this role has received limited attention in the academic literature. This paper looks to make a small contribution to helping to fill that gap by exploring how the leading retailers in the UK are addressing the challenge of net-zero emissions. The paper includes a short outline of the origin and characteristics of the net-zero concept, a literature review of how different industries are approaching net-zero emissions to provide an academic context and frame of reference, an exploratory examination of how the ten leading retailers in the UK are addressing greenhouse gas emissions, and some concluding reflections on this examination. By way of a reflective conclusion, a number of issues, relating, for example to the aspirational and expectational nature of the retailers’ commitments to net-zero emissions, to the concept of net-zero emissions, and to sustainability, are discussed.
