This doctoral submission (with publication) comprises two components: (i) a corpus of six publications (53,088 words), and (ii) an accompanying thesis (26,554) that provides a total word count of 79, 642 words. Chapter 1 provides a biographical account of my engagement with the academic field of sport and Christianity, between 2003 and 2012, and demonstrates my 'wider contribution' to the international development of this subject area. Chapter 2 contexualises the six publications that accompany the thesis, within the existing literature on sports and Christianity by conducting a 'systematic review of literature', which demonstrates the 'originality' of my contribution to the field. The review comprises six themed sections: (i) theologies of play in sport (ii) sport, religion and popular culture (iii) muscular Christianity and sports ministry (iv) theological ethics in sport (with psychological considerations) (v) institutions and governance of sport: a case study of the modern Olympic Games (vi) emerging research topics. The review is prefaced by a brief overview of pioneering scholars and initiatives in the field and an outline of the aims and the methodological approach. Finally, my reflections in the Postscript identify a range of future research projects that have emerged from conducting this PhD.
