Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Rays a Laugh' was exhibited in 'Love over Gold', Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, (30 October 2003 – 25 April 2004) All works in this exhibition exemplified the variety of direct and indirect approaches to portraiture and identity in recent British art from 1990 onwards, Artists used a range of spontaneous, playful, analytical, unconventional and traditional methods of production and focused on portraiture and identity through topics such as sport, medicine, social history, music and design. Besides Billingham, other exhibited artists were Charles Avery, Christine Borland, Martin Boyce, Roderick Buchanan, Helen Chadwick, Moyna Flannigan, Damien Hirst, Louise Hopkins, Jim Lambie, Chad McCail, Wendy McMurdo, Victoria Morton, Julie Roberts, Yinka Shonibare and David Shrigley
