Abstract
Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Rays a Laugh' was exhibited in 'Strange Days, British Contemporary Photography', Claudia Gian Ferrari Arte Contemporanea, Milan, Italy, (18th September - 8th November 1997). The exhibition was curated by Gilda Williams. Besides Billingham, other participating artists were Zarina Bhimji, Thomas Demand, Willie Docherty, Paul Graham, Sarah Jones, Sarah Lucas, Wendy McMurdo, Steven Pippin, John Stezaker, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gillian Wearing and Catherine Yass. The common thread throughout the exhibition was a spirited sense of adventure and a breaking down of traditional photo-aesthetics. There was a fully illustrated catalogue with text by Gilda Williams
