Abstract
Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Rays a Laugh' was exhibited in the show 'Stranger than Fiction', Leeds City Art Gallery (24 Apr – 6 Jun 2004). The exhibition then toured across the UK to Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle (10 Jul – 12 Sep); Aberystwyth Arts Centre (18 Sep – 6 Nov); Usher Gallery, Lincoln (13 Nov 2004 – 9 Jan 2005); Nottingham Castle (30 Apr – 12 Jun) and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery (25 Jun – 7 Aug) The exhibition explored personal and invented narratives, revealing a potent and, at times, exotic world where truth is often more curious than fiction and where fiction is made more powerful through fact. work demonstarted inspiration from a variety of sources, including the artists personal situations, the notion of self and identity, family history, myth and legend. The exhibition included photography, video and film. Besides Billingham, other participating artists were Jananne Al-Ani, Tracey Emin, Issac Julien, Donald Rodney, Zineb Sedira and Gavin Turk.
