Abstract

There are numerous political and social issues affecting the UK presently, one of the biggest is the perceived housing crisis. This apparent housing crisis consists of several issues. The main aim of this study is to examine the UK housing crisis from the perspective of young people (aged 18-26) and planners. This examination will be done answering three research questions: 1) Young people and the perceived housing crisis; 2) Young people and expected changes in housing pathways; 3) Solutions and ideas proposed by planning practitioners and young people. This research was achieved by the use of semi-structured interviews, with young people and planning professionals. This work found that housing wealth was one of the biggest issues facing young people, with there being a growing divide in wealth between the younger and older generations. It also found that while there is still a consensus home-ownership will be achieved, there is a clear understanding that this will be later than previous generations. This was summed up with the use of three terms: ‘Stay-at-home Generation’, ‘Generation Rent’ and ‘Generation Mortgage’. Finally, this work looked at solutions. These were suggested by young people and planning professionals alike and focused on a whole raft of measures that could solve the housing crisis.
