Abstract

‘100 Films, 100 Posters’ is a film poster festival that has been hosted by Jeonju International festival since 2015. It is co organised by Jeonju International Film Festival and the graphic design journal ‘Graphic’ for the purpose of encouraging collaboration between the film industry and the graphic design community. For each year’s event, 100 graphic designers are chosen to create original posters for 100 feature films among Jeanju’s Official Selections. Billingham’s ‘Ray & Liz’ feature was selected and a new poster was designed in response to the film by the graphic design company 5unday based in Jeonju, South Korea. A central aim of ‘100 Films, 100 Posters’ is to promote experimentation and imagination unrestricted by the rules and conventions of commercial film poster design. The posters in the festival respond to each selected film and redefine its identity. The idea here is that a film poster, as well as being a promotional tool, is also an autonomous medium that symbolises itself as a single image, amplifying its message and engaging an audience. The posters in ‘100 Films’ 100 Posters’ differ greatly to the commercial posters of films. ‘100 Films, 100 Posters’ serves as a forum to promote discussions about the expressive range of film posters as well as the function of it as a medium to connect feature films and audiences. An exhibition of the hundred newly designed film posters was held at ‘The Factory of Contemporary Arts’ in Palbok, Jeonju, South Korea Thursday 2nd May – Suturday 11th May 2019. Limited edition large size professionally printed copies of all one hundred posters were for sale to the public. There was a fully illustrated catalogue of the exhibition called ‘100 Films, 100 Posters 2019’ published by Graphic ISBN Number: 978-89-98143-68-8 and a 12 page illustrated gallery brochure describing the project in Korean with English translation
