Abstract
This chapter explores the notion of empathy as a threshold concept for students entering the helping professions, and as a necessary skill and quality for students in other disciplines such as business. Presenting evidence from an action research study within the social care profession, the chapter contributes to the discussion of what might constitute 'deliberative pedagogy', and empathy within such a pedagogy, in PBL.
