Why have a long, narrow and dark corridor before a large, bright, circular room? How do you induce movement along a precise path? What reactions does a series of rooms in succession provoke if they have same shape but different colours? What if the use of light is different in each room? Or materials? The sequence is a compositional method, it is a system of organization of a series of elements according to a scheme of meaning. This text is proposed as a reconstruction of a general picture of the sequence defined as a compositional method of architecture, understanding its potentialities and characteristics according to the different interpretations of space, and consequently of time. It will be noted, in this path, how in relation to different artistic and social influences, the concept of sequence has been modified throughout history and applied to architecture in different ways. From an initial definition linked to the visual world - starting with cinema or Picturesque - the sequence becomes programme, movement, and finally perception, experience and narrativity.
