Abstract

The Hrant Dink Foundation – working for reconciliation between warring factions – has published ‘The Sealed Gate’, including a chapter by UoG’s James Derounian. The ‘Sealed Gate’ conference took place at Ankara University and sought to explain and articulate practical mechanisms for normalising relations across the Turkish-Armenian border. Derounian’s contribution looks at small scale community development initiatives to compliment state-level activity. James says “the Armenian-Turkish border remains closed, and so cross-border links can re-introduce the possibility of interaction between historically feuding parties. Using FaceTime and Skype for example can enable estranged peoples to open dialogue, without the fear of travelling to potentially hostile territory” The book is targeted at regional decision-makers and published in Turkish.
