Abstract

LID (Film, 2017, Duration 2:05) is the fourth part of “The Scientist Series”, an exploration of death, acceptance, and renewal, born originally from a 9 part poetic cycle, in which a scientist tries to “distil” her grief, her loss, and extract its elemental meaning. Continuing from the film BOXES, a poetic documentary, in which I explored a coffin factory and all the processes undertaken to produce our final envelopment, LID, is the living, active, performative confrontation with the final box. LID was originally part of a longer film, in which a dancer works with, around and in, what is in fact, a trunk - and after experiencing and portraying a myriad of reflective emotions, she in fact “packs” herself for the final journey. As has been the case with my previous work, .Earthed, for instance, I am keen to find a defining image which becomes both meaningful and elemental in terms of my response to these ideas. This is also informed by the frugality of expression allowed within the poetic form and the desire to comprehend and communicate an idea in a “nutshell”. LID has therefore been edited down to a single shot film, in which the dancer confronts, and almost lovingly, explores the lid of the final box. There is no clue to what is to come, though it could be said, that the performer is now ready to go, and her face reveals little more than a dreamy resignation. All prior exploration in now exhausted. The sound design is applied in minimal layers, sonically manipulated, which combines traces of ‘dead’ spatial tones, winds, boat halliards and rigging, which as a final mix, signal to the viewer the method of the final journey. This box to be carried by the ferryman to the other side.
