Abstract
The aim of this paper is to outline the nature and characteristics of food crime and to provide a short case study of the establishment of the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) in the UK. The findings reveals that food crime is complex and well-hidden or disguised, that it can have a wide range of impacts on the economy and society but that, to date, it has attracted only limited attention in the academic literature. The establishment of the UK’s new NFCU in 2015 may offer the opportunity to develop the specialist knowledge and expertise and hopefully to secure the necessary financial resources to tackle food crime effectively and efficiently. However the paper suggests that the NFCU faces a number of challenges in successfully sourcing information about food crime and in pursuing subsequent law enforcement activities.
