Abstract

This report from the BBSRC funded project Perennial Biomass Crops for Greenhouse Gas Removal (PBC4GGR) addresses the high-level project objective: De-risk the future roll-out of GGR via perennial biomass crops (PBC) by establishing the conditions required for farmer uptake and wider social acceptance. This research aimed to collect the current grower and stakeholder experiences and identify enablers and barriers to growing Miscanthus and SRC willow. Qualitative data relevant to farm, industry and policy domains was collected using interviews and workshops. Analysis of this data was used to map out the enabling environment of biomass cropping (policy, institutions, economic, socio-economic context), identifying potential enablers and barriers to upscaling. This report presents Phase 1 analysis. Phase 2 builds and extends this analysis with stakeholder regional workshops focusing on opportunities for PBC co-benefits, as reported in this paper https://doi.org/10.1016/j.erss.2025.103936. Further research reports on potential PBC integration strategies and support mechanisms are available here https://eprints.glos.ac.uk/16358/. This research was conducted as part of the UK's BBSRC funded project Perennial Biomass Crops 4 Greenhouse Gas Removal (https://pbc4ggr.org.uk/). The authors wish to thank the funders and the partners in the project for their support, as well as the many stakeholders who participated in the research.
