Abstract
This introductory chapter sets out the book's central argument that restorative justice can be understood through the lens of whole systems, embedded across criminal justice, education, health, housing, and community settings. It begins with a brief introduction to the concept of restorative justice and a mapping of the expanding global landscape of restorative justice, tracing its development from criminal justice into an increasingly diverse range of institutional and community contexts. The chapter then introduces three modes of integration used to help understand the ways in which integration takes place: institutionalising, in which restorative justice is embedded through external policy and statutory frameworks; formalising, in which organisations adopt restorative approaches through internal choice and structured practice; and shaping, in which bottom-up, community-rooted approaches cultivate the relational and cultural conditions for restorative work. The chapter finally introduces some cross cutting practical and conceptual themes for the chapters that follow, and outlines the structure of the work to follow.
