Abstract
Restorative justice has become a vital part of responses to crime and harm across the world, yet its potential extends far beyond the criminal justice system. This talk presents 'Integrating restorative Justice: a whole system approach' (Bristol University Press, Oct 2026), an edited volume of 24 chapters from academics, policymakers, and practitioners exploring how RJ is being embedded across whole-country systems. Drawing on examples from policing, education, healthcare, social work, housing, and organisational settings, the book introduces a three-mode framework of institutionalising, formalising, and shaping processes to help understanding the different ways RJ takes hold within and across sectors. The talk will reflect on the cross-cutting challenges and opportunities this reveals, including the sustainability of provision, the risks of proceduralisation, and the tensions between purist and maximalist conceptions of restorative practice.
