Abstract

Critical Matter was an exhibition presenting installations by four artists: Rosanna Dean, Victoria Mihatovic, Susie Olczak and Samuel Padfield. The sculptural works animated the Dyson Gallery by exploring ways we positioned ourselves in the world around us. In accordance with philosopher Henri Bergson’s notion that all materials were entangled in the web of life, the artists sought to unravel the relationship between people's activity and the material world. Human intervention in the natural landscape was at the core of the four artists’ practice. Our relationship with the environment was explored through the choice of everyday materials, deeply ingrained with the mark of the urban landscape. Separated from industrial processes, they were re-contextualised as a vehicle for the exploration of the subconscious. They were released from their traditional associations and were allowed to take on new meanings.
