Abstract
This presentation outlines key findings and recommendations from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Restorative Justice (APPG-RJ), with particular relevance for probation and prison professionals across the UK and Ireland. It summarises two major phases of work: an extensive national inquiry (2021–22) that gathered written and oral evidence from across the sector, and a follow-up series of briefing papers (2022–24) addressing the challenges and opportunities in implementing restorative justice across justice, education, health, and social care. The talk highlights persistent issues around access, capacity, and awareness in the criminal justice system, emphasising regional inequities, practitioner gatekeeping, and the lack of consistent funding and professional standards. It explores four targeted workstreams: raising standards in sensitive cases; promoting universal access to RJ in adult and youth justice; embedding restorative approaches in public services beyond justice; and strengthening the evidence base through improved research commissioning, data sharing, and evaluation.
