Abstract

While there is a growing body of research on public perceptions of landscapes and their preferences, there is a lack of evidence of the public's views on the impact of Agri-Environment Scheme (AES) agreements on different landscapes. AES are the main policy mechanisms by which farmers and land managers can manage land for biodiversity, landscape and tackling climate change. Much of the evidence underpinning this policy is based on the views of experts but this study sought the views of those who use the countryside regarding changes to landscapes aimed at benefiting biodiversity and adapting to climate change. The project aimed to 1.Increase our understanding of public perceptions of the effectiveness of agri-environment schemes (AES) in delivering the benefits that they seek for from their local landscape and the changes that might result 2.Shed light on how the public's views and perceptions compare with 'expert' opinions of the AES' effectiveness on landscape character, quality and function. 3.Use these insights to provide recommendations on the future alignment of AES landscape objectives with the outcomes desired by the public. 4.Provide some evidence of how important the public consider it is for a landscape objective to be included in AES and what objective ought to deliver.
