Abstract

This book chapter begins by historically contextualising those changes in global politics which have created the conditions for the rise of new kinds of ‘extremist’ movements. We then look at the language which is used to describe these current developments, looking particularly at the terms ‘extremism’ and ‘radicalisation’. The chapter then considers some key messages from research concerning the the reasons why people become involved in these movements. The chapter concludes with some case studies which focus on the safeguarding responsibilities of Social Workers in this area of work.
