The ongoing green transition of the global economy requires production processes with low greenhouse gasses emissions. Algae-based products have a great potential to contribute to a successful green transition, but further technological and management innovation is needed in order to supply large volumes of algae-based products at competitive prices. In this chapter, we take both a macroeconomics and a microeconomics perspective to identify bottlenecks in the development and commercialization of bulk algae-based products at the global level. The macroeconomics perspective helps us to identify growth and competitiveness at the global level, while the microeconomics perspective helps us to identify the innovation needed to reduce production costs and improve profitability. The chapter concludes by providing policy recommendation for the development of the algae-based sector.
