Abstract

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 was a landmark agreement that endeavored to standardize international maritime law and was seen as the “Constitution for the oceans” (Freestone, 2012, 672). The convention regulates the use of the oceans, the rights to natural resources therein, and maritime piracy.
