Abstract

This research was conducted by the Sexual Violence Research Group based at the University of Gloucestershire after a request by Gloucestershire Constabulary Child Sexual Exploitation Team. Our research question was whether a deep analysis of the case files held for a single years’ worth of CSE reports would show any trends which might help inform prevention and response. The results were broadly consistent with the existing literature on CSE showing marginalised populations are at greater risk – here this includes young people with Learning Disabilities (as also found by Franklin & Smeaton 2017); those in the care system (foster care or group care) (Hickle & Roe-Sepowitz 2018), LGBT young people and so forth. The results also broadly match findings relating to co-present experiences and behaviours for CSE including co-offending, poorer school achievement, greater chance of being NEET, substance misuse, prior sexual abuse, coercive and controlling relationships with intimate partners, self-harm and suicide attempts (Hickle & Roe-Sepowitz 2018) and CSE affected peer groups (Klatt et al 2014). The results indicate a number of clear recommendations, most of which relate to the need for further analysis, information holding and identification of what is working. As a team we are aware that these recommendations are made against a backdrop of tight restrictions on resources for Policing and therefore prioritisation will be needed. .
