This study examined the relationship between English footballers' perceived purpose for playing football and achievement goal orientation. Differences between this relation was compared at three playing levels: professional, semi-professional and amateur. This was assessed using two questionnaires: the Task and Ego Orientation Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda & Nicholls, 1992) and the Perceived Purpose of Soccer Questionnaire (PPSQ; Carpenter & Yates, 1997). The results of a canonical correlation analysis revealed a conceptually coherent relationship between achievement goal orientations and the perceived purpose of football. Specifically, a high task orientation was positively related to fitness, and negatively to financial remuneration and aggression as purpose of football. High ego orientation was related to financial remuneration, status and sportspersonship. Professional players scored higher on those purposes of football related to fitness, financial remuneration, aggression, sportspersonship, but lowest out of three proficiencies on status. Semi-professional scored higher than amateur players on financial remuneration, fitness and aggression, and lower on sportspersonship. The findings are discussed with regards to previous literature and recommendations for future research.
