This paper is a reflective piece of research which considers the successful factors required when making OD interventions in Local Government. It considers both theory from various sources of OD literature and actual practice experienced when working with four councils in the South West of England to improve their public inspection scores from poor and weak to anything fair and above. Seven factors that contributed to success are considered and discussed drawing together the literature and practice. This leads onto the identification of a tool for OD practitioners to prompt themselves to ensure they have covered all critical success factors when engaging in delivering OD interventions within the local government environment. There is also acknowledgement that there are gaps in practice and its translation into theory and literature and suggestions are made on the areas that would bring OD and the political context of local government together more.
