Abstract

Physical literacy is a person's ability and motivation to realise fully her/his own movement potential, their perception in "reading" all aspects of the physical environment, their ability to anticipate movement needs and respond appropriately to these with intelligence and imagination. A physically literate individual is motivated to take part in physical activities throughout her/his entire life. Play is possibly the most important feature of a child's life on which the child builds his/her own identity. It is a means to express oneself freely in a creative, original and imaginative way. Play in this perspective seems to resonate with the main concepts of physical literacy: unity of body and mind in an individual, the role of movement in cognitive development and in developing a sense of self. The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between play and physical literacy and to gain a critical understanding of the role of active play in promoting physical literacy from a child's perspective. This research project is structured in two phases: a secondary data analysis of Online Pupils Survey OPS 2008 a survey involving more than 17,000 young people aged 8 to 14 years old and a participatory research project that involved 7 children aged 10 who recorded and later reflected on their play experiences. The methods used in the secondary data analysis are descriptive and bivariate statistics studying PA level and trends. In the participatory research the children collected data on play through visual methods and later reflected on their play experiences.
