Abstract

Illustrated Lecture at Art Exchange, Essex University, Colchester, 15th March, 2017, drawing parallels and insights into three bodies of family based works evolved from the artists lived experience: ‘Ray’s a Laugh’ photographs, 1990 - 96; early video works made of the artist's family life, 1996 - 2000 as well as the gallery film ‘Ray’, 16mm, 33mins written and directed by Richard Billingham, produced by Jacqui Davies and shot be DoP Daniel Linden which reconstructs Billingham's childhood memories and experience growing up on a council estate in the West Midlands during the Thatcher era. The lecture was delivered in the University of Essex's Art Exchange Gallery in the same space as a solo exhibition by Richard Billingham entitled "Order from Chaos" showcasing twelve of Billingham's vintage gallery pieces from 'Ray's a Laugh' and 3 early video works.
