Abstract

This exhibition echoes the first snap cardigan exhibition held at la galerie du jour as part of the Paris Photography Month in 1986, two years after the gallery’s opening. Stylist, philanthropist and collector agnès b. (designer of the snap cardigan) noted on that occasion, "A while ago, I designed a cardigan for myself. I wanted a sweatshirt that opened in front with lots of snaps that evoke a Renaissance garment, a child’s garment for grown-ups, or the other way round… I had the idea for the exhibition when I saw people making the garment their own, adapting it to their personal style. It occurred to me that photographers are never given the same subject, and that they would each have their own vision of the garment…’ 140 photographers contributed to the 1986 show. Acclaimed by the public and critics, the show was then presented at Centre Pompidou in 1996. For the 2019 exhibition, agnès b. gave ‘carte blanche’ to over 60 photographers and artists of 14 different nationalities both established artists and young artists from the contemporary scene. They were invited to respond photographically and give their own interpretation of the garment by working to the specification of a single 40×60 cm photograph that included in one way or another the Snap cardigan. Besides Richard Billingham, other participating artists included David Lynch, Joel Mayerowitz, Juergen Teller, Lucas Foglia, Roger Ballen, Mark Cohen and Rinko Kawauchi. Photographers... Artists and the Snap Cardigan will travel to Hong Kong, New York and Tokyo. There was also a fully illustrated hardback book ‘agnès b.: the Snap cardigan’ published by Editions Assouline in September 2019
