Abstract

Who Decides? was an exhibition and series of public events at the National Museum Cardiff that ran from 22nd Oct 2017 - Sep 2nd 2018. The main idea underpinning the exhibition is that museum's collections belong to everyone, but only a small number of people normally make decisions about what is collected and how it is displayed. National Museum Wales aims to involve more people in their work and by making the collection more accessible to all, the exhibition aimed to create a more democratic and accountable museum where everyone can enjoy contemporary art. The show was selected from the large collection of paintings, sculptures, films, prints and drawings that the Museum and the Derek Williams Trust have acquired over the last 10 years. The show was curated by service users from The Wallich, a charity supporting people who have experienced homelessness in Wales. Artist Richard Billingham had one framed photographic piece 'Three Cliffs' (2001) selected. Other featured artists included Anthony Caro, Olga Chernysheva, Richard Deacon, Laura Ford, Richard Long, Paula Rego, Clare Woods and Bedwyr Williams. The exhibition also featured an installation of over 70 ceramic works from the private collection of the gallery owner Anita Besson (1933-2015). This outstanding collection, bequeathed to the Derek Williams Trust in 2016, featured work by 13 makers including Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Ryoji Koie and Claudi Casanovas. It was displayed together in the exhibition for the first time. As well as Wallich service users, the general public also contributed to Who Decides? by voting for their favourite work to be ‘released’ from the store and placed on public display.
